What many people don't realise is that it is totally possible for a woman living with HIV to have a healthy, HIV negative baby. If we can get a woman on HIV treatment early enough into her pregnancy, we can suppress the virus within her body, reducing the risk of HIV transmission to Zero.
Over the past two years our prevention of mother to child transmission program has been 100% successful, with no child being born with HIV when we have got the mother onto treatment at least three months prior to deliver.
This was the case for Charity, who had a healthy baby boy Kim at the end of 2017. Thanks to your support we were able to provide Charity with medication, information on HIV, counselling and a birthing hamper to support her when she gave birth.
Our birthing hampers can be life changing, being the difference between a woman giving with at home, or safely in a facility.
Just a simple hamper of diapers, blankets, disinfectant, scalpels, umbilical clips and chitenges can provide the right tools at a clinical level for a mother to have a safe birth.
Kim came in for his first HIV test at 6 weeks old and thanks to your support was tested as HIV negative. He will still be tested at 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months to ensure that he doesnt contract HIV during breastfeeding but as Charity is completely virally suppressed and taking her medication well we expect him to pass out of our Prevention of Mother to Child transmission program in just over a year with a bright future ahead.
None of the work we do would be possible without your support. Children can be born HIV free, people can get onto treatment and live long healthy lives. HIV treatment does work and you are making it possible for people to be healthy, happy and live long lives - Thank you for your support!
