TINY TIM & FRIENDS IS ONE OF THE PROVIDERS OF SPECIALIST PAEDIATRIC HIV SERVICES IN ZAMBIA
HOW TINY TIM & FRIENDS BEGANTiny Tim & Friends story began in 2004 when a seven month pregnant, HIV+ woman, who was living in a bus terminal in Lusaka, was found by the sisters of a local orphanage and brought to Dr. Tim Meade for medical care and support. After delivering the baby Dr. Tim and a group of volunteers worked together to support the mother by taking turns to bring warm formula to the child.
As the new mother was too sick and unable to care for her newborn son, she asked Dr. Tim to take care of the baby. As a sign of gratitude she named the baby Tim. It was baby Tim and his mothers story that inspired Dr. Tim’s family and friends to begin Tiny Tim and Friends (TTF), with the aim to support HIV+ women and children throughout Zambia. |
HOW TINY TIM & FRIENDS HAS GROWNStarting off as a family project Tiny Tim & Friends has since grown as an local not for profit organisation, acquiring donors and supporters who have enabled us to develop our services, fill gaps in care, and support the needs of patients in Lusaka. Since 2004 we have began supporting paediatric HIV care in a small clinic, Tiny Tim & Friends is now supporting over 850 patients per year at the TTF Clinic.
As we have grown we have developed new programmes ensuring that at risk children in Lusaka with HIV are receiving the full range the care and support they need to lead happy healthy lives. Today TTF offers support to HIV+ children and pregnant women both within the community and through the services at our clinic. |

WHAT TINY TIM AND FRIENDS DOES TODAY
Today our Tiny Tim and Friends works in communities across Lusaka to reach out to as many people as possible with HIV awareness, testing, treatment and prevention work. Alongside the TTF Clinic we work in the following ways:
- TTF Clinic -supporting over 800 patients, the TTF Clinic works to initiate patients onto HIV Treatment (ART), and help them to stay in care so that they can live long healthy lives.
- Community work – The biggest barrier to people accessing HIV treatment is Stigma. By working in the communities around Lusaka we can provide HIV education, HIV testing and enrol people identified as HIV+ into treatment at the TTF Clinic.
- PMTCT – If a pregnant woman living with HIV takes her medication properly - she can achieve viral suppression, meaning the risk of transmission to HIV to her child during birth is reduces to zero. We provide pre and post birth support to HIV+ pregnant women to enable them to have have healthy babies
- Nutritional support – When a child living with HIV is malnourished their body is less able to absorb the HIV treatment. By supporting malnourished children we quickly help them gain weight and stablise their health
